homemade makeup remover

homemade makeup remover

I believe homemade is always best, even when it comes to personal care products! By making them yourself, you know exactly what's in them and exactly what's NOT in them, and you know the quality and source of the ingredients. Remember, your skin is your body’s largest organ, so what you put on it matters! Not to mention you’ll save a whole lot of money by going DIY, and by making small batches to start you can avoid the disappointment of having a whole bottle of something you don’t like.

One of my favourite products to make at home is my homemade makeup remover, because it does such a great job without being harsh on my skin. Watch me whip up a batch…

O = good for oily skin, D = good for dry skin, Normal skin try any combo

  • 1 tbsp oil (combination or single of…)
    • Jojoba (O)
    • Castor (O)
    • Vitamin E
    • Macadamia (D)
    • Grapeseed (O)
    • Sweet almond (D)
    • Avocado (D)
    • Olive oil (D)
  • 5 drops food grade essential oil (combination or single of…)
    • Lavender (O, D)
    • Rose (D)
    • Geranium (O)
    • Tea Tree (O)
    • Sandalwood (D)
  • ½ tsp xanthan gum
  • 1 cup water (combination or single of…)
    • Rosewater (D)
    • Orange blossom (O)
    • Distilled water
    • Witch hazel (O)
    • Aloe vera juice (O)
  1. Place glycerin, oil, essential oil and xanthan gum in a small jar. Using an emersion blender, coffee frother or whisk to mix until combined and xanthan dissolved.
  2. Add water, continue mixing for 1 minute, or until mixture is smooth, thick and homogenous. Transfer to a glass bottle with a pump bottle and it’s ready to use!

To take makeup off, wet face with warm water. Massage in 2 – 3 pumps of makeup remover and massage over face. Take a face washer or face cloth and wet with warm water. Wipe off makeup. The ingredients in the makeup remover will work wonders on your skin overnight, but you can of course follow up by cleansing with your regular cleanser and applying any nighttime products. Enjoy!

Note: We recommend making smaller amounts first off so you can test which ingredients your skin likes the best – simply follow the exact same instructions, just use a smaller jar.

While I would love to make everything from scratch, it's not always possible (especially for makeup), so the brand I choose to wear is Jane Iredale - it has a rating of 2 (LOW HAZARD) by the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep assessment meaning it's not damaging me or others... but it has the BEST coverage! I love it, and even wore a whole face of Jane Iredale makeup for my latest book cover shoot. If you want healthy makeup that doesn’t look like healthy makeup, this is the brand for you. I buy all my Jane Iredale products from Adore Beauty, and recommend them highly… click on the banner below to shop (affiliate link):
