Hope you're keeping warm this week... the beanie and gloves have come out for me down here in Melbourne! While I'm a big fan of the warmer weather (I need that sunshine to grow my tomatoes!), I find myself cooking much more in the cooler months... baking bread, cooking hearty soups, stews and curries, making rich pasta sauces and puddings, infusing a batch of mulled wine. I hate to sound so cliché, but gee I love my slow cooker during this time! I wrote my latest cookbook 'Modern Slow Cooker' during last year's winter, and while the book-writing process is stressful (always thinking "how can I add more value to you, the reader?"), it struck me just how wonderfully calm this style of cooking is. I miss the smell of delicious goodness wafting from the kitchen at literally every hour of the day... from breakfast when I woke up, to a meal ready to serve up at dinner time. My family and I would play cards with a hot toddy infusing in the slow cooker, happily keeping warm for whenever we were ready for top-ups. There was sticky date pudding brought to dinner at a friend's house that had been cooked that day in the slow cooker and effortlessly transported in the pudding steamer. That's the cook I want to be, the person I want to be... and here's the best bit, there's nothing aspirational about it!
