Handmade Organic Flavour Blend Salts: My Three-Year Story

After three years off the shelves, my two organic flavour blends are back: the Flavour Bomb Salt and the No-Chicken Chicken Salt. Both are handmade in small batches, both are organic, and both are designed to take simple home cooking from "fine" to "everyone's asking for seconds".

If you're new here, these are the salts I reach for when I want a weeknight meal to taste like I actually put effort in. Sprinkle either one on whatever you're cooking, and that's the whole win.

The three-year wait

Three years ago, my flavour blends sold out. They've been gone ever since - not because I didn't want to keep selling them, but because finding a manufacturer who could make them at commercial scale, the way I make them at home, turned out to be near impossible.

I had meeting after meeting after meeting (after meeting!). Every single one ended the same way: to make these at scale, we'd need to cut corners, change the recipe, and add ingredients I just wasn't willing to add. Synthetic anti-caking agents, free-flowing additives, MSG, cheaper substitute ingredients, the works - none of it sat right with me.

So I went without.

So mum and I are making them ourselves

After accepting that I was never going to get these manufactured at the quality I wanted, I made a call. These products need to be out there - and if the only way to do that properly is for me to make them myself, then that's just what has to happen.

So mum and I have hired a commercial kitchen, and we're hand-making small batches the exact same way I make them in my own home kitchen. Same recipe, same ingredients, same care. Just... more of it.

Is it the most efficient use of my time? Probably not. Is it the most economical? Definitely not. But these flavour blends are something I deeply believe in, and the world is better with them in it.

What's actually in them

We've used a whole heap of genuinely nutritional ingredients:

  • Organic nutritional yeast flakes - a brilliant source of B12 and other B vitamins
  • Pink Himalayan salt - packed with trace minerals you don't get in regular table salt
  • Organic garlic, onion, coriander seed, celery seed and spices - real ingredients, doing real work

No MSG, no synthetic anti-caking agents, no free-flowing additives, no GMOs, no artificial colours, no artificial flavours, no vegetable oils. Just REAL ingredients, the same as you've got in your pantry at home.

How to use them: the simplest rule ever

Anytime you're cooking anything savoury, wherever you'd usually add salt during cooking, or wherever you'd season your final dish at the table, reach for one of these instead. That's it. That's the whole rule.

A few of my go-tos:

  • Sprinkled on roast veggies before they go in the oven
  • Stirred through soft scrambled eggs
  • Tossed through fresh popcorn
  • Seasoning for kale chips and fritters
  • A finishing pinch on sourdough toast with butter

They work just as beautifully in food cooked from scratch on the stove as they do in dishes made in the Thermomix - any savoury dish gets a serious flavour upgrade with a sprinkle or two.

Why this matters: home cooking is worth it

I've been banging on about home cooking for 15 years now. Going through this whole manufacturer search gave me a whole new appreciation for why it matters.

Commercial might look the same on the outside, but it absolutely is not the same on the inside. Not in flavour, not in nutrition, not in care. Convenience comes at a cost, and once you really see what gets stripped out and added back in to make something "shelf-stable" or "scalable", it's hard to unsee.

Home cooking is worth it. It always has been.
